Local Businesswoman & Artist Brings International Craftsmanship to Her Newest Work 11-11-05
This
year's Day of the Dead marked a significant date for Puerto Rico's
economic relations with the global economy. Local artist Siddhia
Hutchinson of Fine Art Design Studio was meeting with internationally
recognized pottery master, Gorky González,
in his production studio in the mountains of Mexico. At 6,000 feet in
the historic city of Guanajuato, the air is thinner, much cooler, and
you can feel the heat and almost smell the wholesome goodness of fresh
baked ceramics. Under these conditions, final design decisions were
made and trade history was written as a production deal was sealed with
an excellent cup of coffee.

Vieques Island, Puerto Rico. She produces her work in studios on
Vieques and El Yunque rainforest, and manages her own gallery and
wholesale art business for prints, textiles, and hand-painted ceramics.
Siddhia
has been producing her work from Puerto Rico for over 20 years and is
currently expanding offerings of the Design Studio to include items
manufactured in Latin America. This collaboration between fine artist
and pottery master was arranged in part by a meeting at the New York
Gift Show, and in part by the Mexican government agency, World Trade
Commission of the State of Guanajuato (COFOCE).
COFOCE
was started over twelve years ago by the now President Fox, developing
trade affiliates with countries across the globe. Now, after much
traveling, design modification and authentic enchiladas, Puerto Rico
has been added to the Commission's international roster and Fine Art
Design Studio has become their first regional client.
In
1992, the President of Mexico presented Gorky González the National
Award of Sciences and Arts in the field of Popular Art and Traditions
for "his exceptional Contribution to Mexican popular art". When Siddhia
was searching for the perfect studio to produce her work, it was only
natural for the two artists to find each other and merge their talents.
At
a chilly ten o'clock in the morning of Dia de los Muertos Sr. González pulled from the room-sized kiln behind his house the final product of a
long-term project of Fine Art Design Studio. When the clay temperature
cooled, the colors of Siddhia Hutchinson's new Red Coral dinnerware
collection brightened into the vibrant natural designs, which have
become her calling card throughout the Caribbean.
Production
began that afternoon on a hand-painted ceramic dinnerware collection
that includes espresso cups, coffee mugs, different sized plates and
bowls, a tea set, pitchers and vases. This anticipated collection will
begin shipping on January 1st, 2006 and orders are currently being
accepted through the new eCommerce website, www.SiddhiaHutchinson.com, and Siddhia Hutchinson Fine Art Gallery situated between the ferry dock and the historic lighthouse (9-3, 7 days).
